Sky Sports‘ North-East correspondent, Keith Downie has been discussing the goalkeeper situation at Newcastle and suggests that we may have got it all wrong.

HITC reports that Downie thinks that Karl Darlow still has a future on Tyneside, which potentially leaves the door open for Dubravka to exit following the arrival of Nick Pope, saying: “My understanding is that Darlow has been told he’s got a future at the club, so that leaves a bigger question mark over Dubravka. There was a little bit of talk over him leaving in January, but it didn’t materialise at the time.”

Dubravka has long been hailed as one of the best bargains on the Mike Ashley era, costing just £4m back in 2018, but whether he is not comfortable playing second fiddle to Nick Pope or Eddie Howe just doesn’t fancy him, something seems a bit off.

I think most fans had it in their heads that we now have two first-team quality ‘keepers with either one capable of leading the line from the back and that Darlow would be the one to make way.

However, Darlow still has a contract until 2025 which he may want to fulfill, even if it means spending more time on the bench, whereas Dubravka, who also has three years to run on his contract, will be less willing to watch from the sidelines and may want to move on.
