Looking forward to his first Tyne-Wear derby, Joe Kinnear has called for his side to arms and asked for a repeat of the guts shown in the Everton and Man City matches. JFK has also avoided doing a Ruud Gullit and belittling the match, bigging up a match he has no previous association with. Kinnear said:

‘Hopefully we can go there and put on the same sort of performance like we have in the past couple of games. That won’t be easy because Roy Keane has done a fantastic job there and it will be a tough one for us. There’s a lot of confidence and hopefully it will put us in good stead.

I have been involved in various derbies but they tell me this is the one that beats everything else, so I am looking forward to it. Everybody is saying that if there is one win you want each season it is this one. It means a lot to the people of Newcastle and the supporters particularly. I am well aware of the intensity of it all and we’ll be giving it our best shot.’
