Kenny Wharton has stepped into the shoes of Glenn Roeder as Newcastle United Academy coach (Roeder has other things on his mind at the moment) and guided United to the semis of the Youth Cup after beating Brighton on penalties in midweek.

Wharton : ‘It is unbelievable because we have had teams in the past that we thought would do really well in the FA Youth Cup but got nowhere.

‘This is the youngest team I have ever been involved with and they have achieved more than any other team I have worked with.

‘Why can’t they go on to the final? They can lift the profile of Newcastle United’s Academy. We are here in the semi-finals against Manchester City, who cannot afford to sit back and think we will let them walk through. We will give them a tough game.

‘It’s Glenn’s team, I assist him. It’s a great achievement, he spent a lot of time working on the team.’
