“I also bid a bag of monster munch” – A lot of Newcastle United fans are not surprised that their club bid £7m under the asking price for Jean-Philippe Mateta.
While other Toon fans don’t believe a bid was ever made.
A report in Germany released today claims that the Toon bid for the 22-year-old, who scored 14 goals last season, but it was short of Mainz’s asking price, and Mateta remained with the Bundesliga club.
This seems a strange one, if it is true, because Newcastle spent £40m on Joelinton with the promise that he would be the main centre forward.
So why would the Toon then buy another expensive young striker?
Certainly, I am leaning towards the fans who don’t believe a bid was made. It just doesn’t make sense.
See the best of the reaction below.

I also bid a bag of monster munch and a kit kat for him too , its about as credible as Ashley’s bid . Keep chucking names about that we are bidding on makes us look active but in reality we are not. Concentrate on the ones we do buy not the ones of made up bids

And…making bids, interest, tracking, considering…..it means absolutely nothing at all if we dont sign the players. Its all hot air and does not either confirm true intentions or show progress in rye slightest. We are stagnant under ashley until proven otherwise

Many Newcastle fans are convinced this story is not true.
The problem is yes we have limited resources but bidding €28m for a player when the club want far more makes us look silly, people will say at least he’s trying etc but he knows fine well the bid will get knocked back so therefore mugging the fans off fans off yet again

So we were only €10million off the mark

Other Toon supporters think that Newcastle did make a bid but are not surprised it was under the valuation.
