“My favourite centre-back in Europe” – A lot of Newcastle United fans are responding to another excellent display by their star defender Fabian Schar.
The 27-year-old has scored two goals and provided an assist for both club and country in the last eight days.
The latest piece of brilliance, from the man who cost £3m last summer, was a superb in-swinging cross that Admir Mehmedi was only too happy to glance into the back of the net.
This assist came just three days after the former Basel man scored a sublime goal against the Republic of Ireland.
The Swiss played a beautiful passing move that started with Schar, and when Breel Embolo played the ball back to him just inside the box, he swept a fantastic strike past Darren Randolph.
Schar took some time to settle into the Premier League, but since the second half of last season the 27-year-old has not put a foot wrong for Newcastle, and he is now a real fans’ favourite.
One Newcastle fan has claimed he is the club’s best attacker and defender while another believes that Steve Bruce should play him in midfield.
