‘I’m not going to get excited…’ – Some Newcastle fans react to reporter’s transfer update

Some Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie’s claims, as cited by NUFC 360, on how the Magpies will tackle the transfer market.

It is widely acknowledged that no plans are currently being followed through on until Rafa Benitez’s contract situation is resolved, but Downie believes that at the top of the Spaniard’s shortlist is pinning down West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon now that his season-long loan has effectively concluded with the climax of the Premier League season.

Beyond the Venezuelan, who is attracting a lot of interest from West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club are thought to be targeting a couple of new midfielders, a full-back for both the right and left flanks, as well as another forward.

There is even the chance that owner Mike Ashley will sanction another club record purchase, having smashed our 14-year record by acquiring Miguel Almiron from Major League Soccer franchise Atlanta United for close to £20million in January.

Signing a few new central midfielders would likely be as the replacements to Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden, who are both hopeful of leaving the Magpies in the summer.

A new left-wing-back also makes sense given wide midfielder Matt Ritchie was forced to adapt to the role once Benitez opted to switch to a five-at-the-back system.

Another striker also makes some degree of logic; as while Rondon scored eleven of our 42 Premier League goals, back-up forwards Joselu and Yoshinori Muto only managed three between them.

So when Downie’s claims were shared on social media, here’s how some of the St James’ Park faithful reacted…
