Speaking to the assembled press, Chris Hughton stressed the importance of the Carling Cup to Newcastle`s season and spoke of his personal connection with the competition:

“I was part of the management team at Tottenham when they won the trophy in 1999. It was the Worthington Cup back then, of course, and George Graham was manager, but I was part of it. I am aware of what it means to lift the League Cup as it gives the club a big lift.

We mentioned before the draw was made that we are a club that can`t afford to take this lightly. It`s an avenue for Wembley, it`s an avenue to play in a cup final and it`s an avenue to get into Europe.

The way we approach it has to reflect that. Every game is important for us, whatever stage of the season you are at. And that is the same no matter what state any football club is in. Tonight is no different. We are on the back of an indifferent spell of results – a win and a good performance would give everybody a boost.”
