He Targett’s England Again!

|

Matt Targett spoke to NUFC TV after joining the Magpies on a permanent basis following his successful loan stint last term. The former Aston Villa defender becomes United’s first signing of the summer and he spoke about making the move and his future ambitions.

Matt made it very clear he has his sights firmly on gaining his England debut in the near future, many Toon fans wouldn’t disagree based on last season’s form.

The England squad is still somewhat short of central-defensive options, with a number of players who have struggled in the last few months. Harry Maguire has been badly out of form at Manchester United, Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey have both had difficult seasons with Everton and Joe Gomez has found himself consigned to the sidelines at Liverpool. Matt Targett believes that on his recent form, he is ready to make the step up into the National setup.

Kieran Trippier made his return as one of England’s full-back options and made a full 90min  return against Germany in the recent 1-1 draw. Trippier had been a key member of the squad that made it all the way to the final of the European Championships last summer but is now looking to firmly cement his place within Southgate’s plans.

However, Newcastle’s international involvement might not end there, with Burn and Targett also having been touted for possible future call-ups by Eddie Howe

Speaking to the Northern Echo recently Howe stated “I wouldn’t be surprised if they were called up at all,” said Howe. “I think they’ve been excellent for me, and I can’t speak highly enough of them as footballers and as people. I think they’ve been outstanding, so certainly from their perspective, I hope it happens.”

It would certainly be amazing to see more Toon players emulating the days of Shearer, Waddle and Beardsley et al.
