According to The Times Newcastle United reserve keeper Steve Harper is set to sign a new contract with the Magpies, after the Tyneside club rejected offers from Tottenham Hotspurs and an unnamed Premiership club for the 33-year-old’s services.

This, as the newspaper claims, may be a blessing in disguise for first-team keeper Shay Given, who is expected to complete a move away from the Magpies in the next few days.

Manchester City have made an improved £10 million offer for the veteran stopper, and Given is expected to meet Derek Llambias, the Newcastle managing director, on Tyneside today to ask for the transfer.

The Toon already have several capable candidates in the goalkeeping department who can don the gloves in front of goal. Youngsters Timothy Krul, and Fraser Forster are recognised by many as the duo would lead Newcastle’s new generation of budding youngsters, while Swedish starlet Ole Soderberg looks to be a fantastic prospect, at just 18.

With £10 million from City, Kinnear may finally attempt to capture some of his much coveted targets, with a view to ending the doom and gloom on Tyneside, which has sadly become a regularity.
