It seems that the reports that Newcastle United were very interested in signing Clement Grenier were true although by the sounds of it, we tried to get him on the cheap.

Speaking at Foot Mercato, Grenier’s agent Frederic Guerra confirmed that we’d made a failed attempt to sign up the French international attacking midfielder.

Guerra confirming:

I have been in talks with Newcastle on and off since January 2014. They were a real possibility. We looked at what they had to offer, and I preferred to say no.

There was no clarification as to why this was brought up now because our midfield looks pretty strong, although with continued talk that Cheick Tiote could be moved on, albeit without any credible quotes from anyone, then players could be shifted around accordingly to fit the play in.

The 5 time capped Frenchman would also be able to fill the role that Hatem Ben Arfa frequented in happier times and there could be some sort of swop deal plus cash if a move was to happen.

With only 17 days left in the Summer transfer window though, things will need to get a move on.
