“Great”, “NUFC in his DNA” – Loads of Newcastle fans react to club update

|

Loads of Newcastle United fans have been reacting online, after the club announced that Steve Harper has returned to St. James’ Park as a first-team coach to act as a link between the first-team and academy.

Harper had worked as United’s Lead Academy Goalkeeping Coach up until May, but stepped down from the position to focus on his role as goalkeeping coach for the Northern Ireland national side.

But now that Michael O’Neill’s side have qualified for the Play-Offs for next summer’s Euro 2020, Harper has returned to the North East as the club aim to continue building a pathway between the academy and senior fold.

Harper will be working alongside first-team coaches Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and head of goalkeeping Simon Smith in his new position, and reunites with head coach Steve Bruce after playing under the boss at Hull City.

The retired shot-stopper moved to Hull in 2013 following his release by the Magpies, where he played for 20-years after joining the club’s ranks from Seaham Red Star aged 19.

Harper remains the club’s all-time longest-serving player and made 183 appearances over his time at St. James’ Park – keeping 61 clean sheets across all competitions.

He begins his new role as part of Bruce’s coaching set-up on Saturday, and will be at Villa Park on Monday night for our Premier League game with Aston Villa.

What will the result be at Villa Park?
