French paper L’Equipe is a trusted source, not one of these fly by night set ups that regurgitate a whisper into something else and they have some interesting news on a player that should have left a long time ago.

They say that Yoan Gouffran is set to sign a two year contract in Turkey.

31 year old Gouffran had an ok start to his career here before being one of those comedy players that had people scratching their heads as to why he was involved in a squad, never mind a starting line up as he offered absolutely nothing for a long time.

Joining us in January 2013, his career looked over when relegation came at the end of the 2015/16 season but against the odds, he was kept on and to his credit he started to put the effort in which resulted in him having a good season. Probably because he had found his level although maybe because he respected Rafa Benitez.

News came through the other week that we had offered him a new deal but it’s fairly obvious to suggest that the terms would favour us more than him and he looks to be taking a move away on the back of this.

The club that he is said to be joining is a side that has just been promoted to the Turkish top division for the first time in 15 years. Göztepe S.K.

The Göztepe chairman had previously said the other day that he expected the Gouffran deal to go through.

Gouffran featured in 127 games for us, scoring 19 goals.
