“Got a lot of criticism but he scored goals” – These NUFC fans react to club post

|

A few Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after the club shared a post reflecting on Papiss Cisse’s match-winning goal at home to Crystal Palace in March 2014.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw despite the Toon dominating for large periods of proceedings, as Eagles shot-stopper Julian Speroni was in inspired form between the sticks to deny our frequent flurries on goal.

Speroni did well to deny an early shot from Cisse and gather a later driven effort by Cheick Tiote, to keep the visitors in the match and have the chance to strike the bar themselves through Yannick Bolasie.

Cisse, though, would steal the headlines in the fourth minute of additional time, and deal late heartbreak to the travelling Palace side fighting off the threat of relegation, when the Senegalese forward headed home Hatem Ben Arfa’s cross.

Cisse played 131 times for Newcastle during his four-and-a-half years at the club, scoring 44 goals and recording ten assists in all competitions – the most appearances, goals and assists registered at any side of his senior career.

The result moved the Toon up to eighth in the standings and eight points behind fifth-placed Everton with eight games of the season still to play, and a repeat result this weekend could see Steve Bruce’s Magpies move up to eighth.

We currently sit 11th in the standings, one point behind Roy Hodgson’s Eagles, who will arrive at St. James’ Park on Saturday on a four-game unbeaten run.

What will the result be on Saturday?

Toon win

Draw

Eagles win

Bruce has overseen two wins and one draw in our last four top-flight games, and taking another win at the weekend will see the 58-year-old claim our first victory over Palace since October 2017.

Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to the club’s throwback post…

In other Newcastle United news, a 22-cap international would beΒ open to securing a permanent transfer to St. James’ ParkΒ in January.
