On this day 14 years ago, Newcastle United beat Sunderland 3-2 at St James’ Park with a stunning Emre Belozoglu free-kick proving to be the decisive goal.
It was one of only six the diminutive Turk scored for the Toon, but he will always be remembered for this fantastic moment.
St James’ Park erupted with joy at the sight of the ball flying into the top corner, and Emre embarked on a run towards manager Graeme Souness.
Sunderland were relegated that season with a pitiful 15 points, and Newcastle completed the double over their rivals in March 2006 thanks to a 4-1 win at the Stadium of Light.
However, it was this match at St James’ that stood out. Shola Ameobi scored twice for the Toon before Liam Lawrence and Stephen Elliott scored for the Black Cats – setting the stage for Emre to make himself a hero, and he duly delivered.
The former Turkish international was not on Tyneside for long, but he will never be forgotten about because of that moment.
