Lots of Newcastle United fans have been responding to the day that Alan Shearer walked through the door at St James’ Park.

Even though Manchester United were desperate to sign the striker, Blackburn blocked his move to Old Trafford and granted him to return to his boyhood club in 1996 for a world record transfer of Β£15m. ToonArmy showcased his arrival and unveiling on Twitter.

Various injury issues slightly hampered his career but there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he is the greatest player that has ever worn the famous black and white shirt.

Would you like to see Shearer return as manager one day?

Yes

No

Shearer had his testimonial match in 2006 and retired from football shortly after a serious knee injury, which confirmed in his mind that it was time to call it a day.

From 404 appearances, he scored 206 goals and set the Premier League record for having found the net 260 times, more than any other player in history.

Supporters flooded in with their responses on social media and recollected their own accounts in what was an unforgettable day. One fan said that he still gets “goosebumps” to this day, while another believes that it is still a “very special day”.
