Federico Fernandez completed his £6m move from Swansea yesterday. The Argentinian centre-back was the only signing the club made on deadline day.
We were also expected to recruit a left-back before the transfer window closed, and Rafa Benitez is unlikely to be satisfied with the business done this summer.
Yet, he will be pleased to sign Fernandez, who he worked with for a season at Napoli. When we polled fans about whether the 29-year-old would be a good signing, the majority think he will be a decent addition:
Although we ended up making seven signings, the positive net spend means we haven’t reinvested anywhere near as much as other clubs in the division.
There is a danger we could be left behind, and matching our tenth place from last season will be a struggle. Of course, with Rafa we have a trump card, but we shouldn’t have to rely just on the genius of our manager to improve fortunes on the pitch.
