Rafael Benitez hasn’t had much to celebrate this season. The Spaniard’s struggled at the helm at Newcastle, and most of his struggles have been out of his control. A lack of investment and direction at St James’ Park has left the club in a tough spot.
However, there has been some good news for the club this week.
As per the official Newcastle Twitter page, Jonjo Shelvey has been training this week – meaning that the Englishman is closing in on a return to first-team action.

Shelvey hasn’t played since the 5th of January, and it’s fair to say that he’s been a big miss. He’s a frustrating player, but there’s no denying that on his day he’s one of our best, and in particular, it’s his creativity that we lack. We’ve struggled for goals in recent weeks, and so perhaps his return will be able to give us a bit of a boost in that regard.
At this stage, we still don’t know when he’ll be back, but you’d like to think that within a week or two he’ll be available for selection once again.
Is he going to solve all of our problems? Certainly not – but as one Newcastle fan noted in response, he’ll be like a new signing upon his return.
