Gary Speed – Our Number 11, 11 Years On

|

It’s crazy to think it has been eleven years since Gary Speed shook the football world by taking his own life.

Speedo was loved by all, such a popular figure in the game and idolised by the fanbases of the clubs he played for; Everton, Leeds, Bolton, Sheffield United and of course, Newcastle United.

As the manager of the Welsh national side, Speed put the things in place that have allowed the Welsh team to climb the FIFA rankings and now they find themselves in their first World Cup finals since 1958. That would likely not have happened were it not for Gary Speed’s involvement in improving the training facilities, team culture and national visibility.

Wales are currently preparing for their next World Cup fixture against England on Tuesday and thinking of how proud Speed would have been to see the lads stepping out against their fierce rivals is devastating. I’d imagine, had things been different, that were he not there leading the team out as manager, he’d be sat in the studio next to his best mate, Alan Shearer laughing and joking as the two teams battled it out on the pitch.

It’s always poignant to spare a moment to remember a true legend of the game on this day, but even more so to remind yourself that it’s okay not to be okay. The stigma around mental health is lifting but it’s still prevalent. Thankfully there are plenty of mental health charities out there, and Newcastle United have the Newcastle United Foundation which has groups and activities for those suffering with poor mental health. You’re never alone. And I say this as someone who tried to do the unthinkable last year but came to my senses at the last minute. I will always shout about mental health at any opportunity I get as I can’t stand the idea of anyone getting to the point that I did, or worse.
