Garang Kuol Signs And Talks About Joining Newcastle

|

Friday morning brought confirmation that Garang Kuol has signed for Newcastle from Central Coast Mariners. The transfer will officially go through in January.

Kuol, who turned 18 earlier in September and has been on the radar of several high-profile clubs ever since he waltzed through half of the Barcelona team earlier this year, resulting in Xavi calling him an “unbelievable” talent.

Since then Barcelona, Celtic and Newcastle, amongst others, have been keeping a close eye on the forward who also made his full international debut last week for Australia coming off the bench against New Zealand.

Born in Egypt, Kuol and his family arrived in Australia as refugees from South Sudan. His elder brother Alou moved from the Mariners to German side Stuttgart in 2021.

Because of his age and inexperience, Kuol will need to be loaned out to a European club in January in order to rack up the required amount of points for a successful work permit application. Any appearances he may make for Australia in the World Cup in Qatar will also count towards that goal.

Speaking to NUFC TV, Kuol comes across as very mature and fully up for the task ahead: “It’s unreal. As a young boy in Australia, the Premier League is the main thing that everyone watches but nobody actually thinks they’ll reach those heights. To be one of those people, to be in the position I am, it’s amazing.

“Now that I’ve signed for Newcastle, I want to train hard, play hard, hopefully go to the World Cup and come back here.”

Eddie Howe added: “He’s a young player of huge potential. It shows where the club wants to go in terms of signing young players and trying to develop them in our system for them to be Premier League players in the future.

“He’s had a dramatic rise and he’s in a position that excites everybody but there needs to be some patience shown. We need to look after him and he’ll go out on loan to learn and develop behind the scenes and hopefully when he comes here he can play a part in our future.”
