Steve Harper has talked about ‘tin hats’, Glenn Roeder ‘the trenches’, and on Saturday under-fire chairman Freddy Shepherd trooped out one of Sir Winston Churchill’s speeches.

Writing in his programme notes before the game, Shepherd who was not at the match but in the Med at his holiday home, made the rallying call from afar.

Shepherd: ‘It is in such difficult times that we must all pull together and I know we can rely upon the loyal Newcastle United fans to give their full backing to the team.

‘The pendulum must swing our way sooner rather than later and Thursday’s result against a team at the top if Serie A is evidence of our ability even without so many players.’

The fans made it perfectly plain what they thought of Freddy at the final whistle … and long after!
