Former Toon Star Declared Bankrupt

|

Former Newcastle United midfielder, Danny Guthrie has been declared bankrupt after racking up over £160,000 in gambling debt.

Guthrie played 98 times for Newcastle in a five-year spell between 2008-2012 after signing from Liverpool as a hot prospect. Guthrie had his moments in the black and white but was never really the world-beater he had been tipped to be. He eventually moved on to Reading.

Sport Bible reports that Guthrie had borrowed £75k from a friend to pay his expenses, promising to sell a home to repay the debt. But before that Guthrie ran up the gambling debts, and when he sold the property for £160,000, he chose to repay those debts ahead of other creditors.

His last registered address was in Dubai, however, the bankruptcy order was issued in Stoke, where Guthrie was slapped with the six-year which lasts until May 2028. During this time he will be able to obtain credit of over £500 without declaring his bankruptcy status. There will also be a host of other financial restrictions placed upon the former footballer, in line with UK bankruptcy laws.

It’s another tragic tale of gambling ruining somebody’s life. Guthrie will likely have been getting paid a weekly wage that many people would be happy to receive annually when he was at his peak and will have had access to things most of us could only dream of, and yet the cruel hand of gambling still managed to get him.

It’s all fun and games having a flutter, but you need to know when to stop. If you think you, or even a friend, maybe heading down a slippery slope, you can get help here: Gamcare or Be Gamble Aware.
