Former Newcastle United player Luuk de Jong became a topic of conversation amongst fans following PSV Eindhoven’s Champions League clash with Tottenham Hotspur the other week given his performance in the game.
Plenty were quick to comment that for varying reasons, we never quite saw performances like that from him during his short stay at St James’ Park and he was again the subject of a fair amount of chat following his performance at Wednesday as Spurs played the home leg of that particular affair.
Having spent the second half of the 2013/14 campaign with us on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach, he failed to score once in any of his 12 appearances, but the now 28-year-old has gone from strength to strength after leaving us.
A snip signing for PSV back in the summer of 2014, his Eredivisie record is 128 starts with 75 goals returned and he added to that in midweek.
Luuk de Jong doing more in 6 minutes than he did in 6 months at #nufc

Luuk de Jong is honestly the worst centre forward I have ever seen play for Newcastle United! (And I’ve seen some shockers) Those figures are in comprehensible to anyone who saw him in a black and white shirt! https://t.co/DBxKhWh8ef

To be fair we rarely ever used him in a way that was suited his game, he’s on the long list of players that we’ve failed miserably to get the best out of.

Luuk De Jong has made more of an impact against Premier League opposition in the first 2 minutes of this match than he did during his 6 month loan spell at Newcastle
