Glenn Roeder went cap in hand to Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on the last day of the transfer window when the three strikers he was after didn’t come to St James’ Park. Ferguson came to Roeder’s rescue by loaning him Giuseppe Rossi for four months, when the Old Trafford boss was down to only four strikers himself.

The Manchester Evening News claims privately Ferguson is frustrated at the lack of matches Roeder has given his young player. The idea was for the youngster to gain valuable Premiership experience while at Newcastle.

But Roeder will not be forced into playing a player who is down the pecking order. Shola Ameobi and Oba Martins are obviously ahead of him.
