Freddy Shepherd has praised Glenn Roeder for stearing Newcastle away from the drop after the sacking of Graeme Souness. And he has a novel way of saying he hasn’t offered the job to anyone else, despite a lot of big money going on Martin O’Neill.

Shepherd: ‘Glenn Roeder has done a marvellous job for this football club in the past couple of weeks. But to tell the truth I did not expect anything else, because we all know how capable Glenn is and how much feeling he has for Newcastle United and our supporters.

‘But when you haven’t asked a girl to dance and she tells everybody you have then this is different.’

Italian Roberto Mancini is now third favourite behind the former Celtic boss and Bolton’s Sam Allardyce.
