‘Fantastic’, ‘It isn’t this one’ – Some Newcastle fans react as 27 y/o nominated for PL award

Some Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media, after the club shared that Fabian Schar’s thunderous strike against Burnley has been nominated for the Premier League’s Goal of the Season award.

The 6 ft 1 centre-back was a surprise goalscorer on that February night, as he collected a pass from Javier Manquillo near the right-hand sideline, took a touch to move the ball out of his feet, and unleashed a lethal shot towards Tom Heaton’s near post.

It was the 27-year-old’s third of three goals this season, having moved to Tyneside from Deportivo de La Coruna last summer when we activated his £3million release clause.

The 47-cap Switzerland international’s previous two goals both came against Cardiff, when his brace pulled us two clear of the Bluebirds in January. His only assist for the club also proved decisive, as he created Isaac Hayden’s opener at Wolverhampton Wanderers when we drew 1-1.

For Schar to win the Premier League’s Goal of the Season award, though, he faces competition from Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge for his effort against Chelsea, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey for his goal against Fulham, and Andros Townsend’s strike for Crystal Palace at Manchester City.

A goal from May will also be included on the 15th, which will likely be Vincent Kompany’s screamer against Leicester on Monday night, that may have saved the Etihad Stadium outfit’s title aspirations.

The competition Schar faces to win the award naturally led the replies when the club announced his nomination for Goal of the Season…
