A throwback post by Newcastle United on social media to Alan Shearer’s record-breaking 201st goal for the club has sparked euphoric sensations for tons of fans.
Shearer moved to St. James’ Park in the summer of 1996 having helped Blackburn Rovers to lift the top-flight title the year before, and would firmly establish himself as one of the greatest strikers England has ever seen.
The Newcastle-born hitman had already twice been the Premier League’s top goalscorer by the time he returned to St. James’ Park having left as an 18-year-old, with Shearer lashing home 34 goals in the 1994/95 term and 31 in the 95/96 season.
He would again clinch the golden boot in 96/97 to make it three in a row with 25 goals, and continued to ripple nets up and down the country for the following nine years before injury forced him to retire.
Shearer scored his 201st goal for the club in a meeting with Portsmouth at St. James’ Park in February 2006, when our former captain latched on to Shay Given’s long ball, flicked it on to Shola Ameobi and ran through to score after the Nigerian’s smart back heel.
Shearer sent St. James’ Park wild when the ball hit the net and no player since has been able to match his total 206 goals for the club in league and cup competitions, while no player is yet to match or better his 260 all-time Premier League goals.
Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to the club’s post throwing back to Shearer’s record-breaking afternoon at St. James’ Park…
