Plenty of Newcastle United fans have reacted on Twitter to the claims from Matt Le Tissier that signing Andy Carroll wasn’t much more than a ‘PR stunt’.

The 31-year-old has been back at the club since the summer but still has not scored a goal for the club in any competition. He has assisted twice, but his lack of appearances has meant that he is yet to get a foothold in the campaign, despite having a decent little spell before the Christmas period.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, injuries have plagued his season and he has only been able to rack up 508 minutes of Premier League football behind his back.

Le Tissier battered the club for taking him on, stating that he feels sorry for the player who has had to put up with so many injuries, stating that it must be ‘heartbreaking’.

He went onto say that, bearing in mind the struggles he has gone through over his career, how much thought when into his signing and whether it was made just to get fans on side.

Newcastle fans seem to agree – as you can read below…

With Andy Carroll only having one year on his contract, there will be doubts about keeping him beyond this campaign.

Considering his age and that he will be earning a decent contract, the Magpies might doubt whether he should be apart of their long-term vision.

Ummm… he’s contributed in several games to get points on the board… I disagree entirely. Taking a punt on someone who will work hard for the shirt isn’t a PR stunt… no one thought he’d do much at all, and has surpassed my expectations in terms of a return on what we’ve invested to bring him in… crucial knock down v Palace , plus Sheff United performance = 4 ore points that could save us end of season.
