A few Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after the club shared a post reflecting on our own excitable Edgar, following the release of John Lewis’ latest Christmas advert.
John Lewis’ latest festive campaign focuses on an excitable but accident-prone dragon named Edgar, who sets out on trying to calm his fire breathing as it threatens to ruin the winter period after burning down a Christmas tree, destroying a snowman and a local ice rink.
The advert for John Lewis’ Christmas campaign is highly anticipated each year, and its reveal has sparked Newcastle’s social media team to hop in on the action.
Back in the mid-2000s we had an excitable Edgar of our own in David Edgar, when the Canadian centre-back broke out of the academy to establish himself in Glenn Roeder’s plans.
During his debut season in the first-team, Edgar scored his first goal for the club in a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United, when the Ontario-born defender lashed home a 25-yarder to pull the game level in the 73rd minute.

The Red Devils looked set to be heading for the win until Edgar fired home from the left-wing via a deflection off Paul Scholes, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side sought to compile further misery on an injury-ravished Magpies defence.
Edgar would only score once more for the club before joining Burnley in 2009 and now plays in his native Canada for Ontario-based Forge FC, having also represented Birmingham, Huddersfield, Sheffield United and Hartlepool during his career.
