A second half strike from teenager David Edgar was enough to secure a point against Man U.

The Toon had taken a first half lead through James Millner`s sublime first half strike when Dyer found him on the left with a good pass, before Millner cut inside and sent an unstoppable shot sailing past the stranded Van der Sar

Both sides had further chances prior to half time but it was Man U, in the form of Paul Scholes, who got the next goal. Running on to Giggs` layoff he smacked a low shot in the bottom corner of the net.

Scholes, who was lucky to be on the pitch after committing a series of fouls each worthy of a booking, put Man U in front just seconds in to the first half. Firing a shot through Taylor`s legs and past an unsighted Given.

But the Toon persevered and, showing the spirit that has been so evident of late, got their reward when Scholes deflected Edgar`s shot in to the goal. It was nothing more than Newcastle deserved.

Man U pushed in vain for a winner but the Toon`s makeshift back four stood up well.

Glenn Roeder
‘It was terrific and we will enjoy the result. When you play Manchester United you have to keep trying to take the game to them.
‘The lads came in and did a great job and it just shows how much courage and team spirit there is in the squad.

‘David Edgar is not renowned for his 25 yarders and he must have been saving it for a special occasion.’
