Out of work boss Eddie Howe has again been linked to taking the not yet vacant role at Newcastle United.

Former West Ham and Celtic player Frank McAvennie has told the Football Insider that he understands Howe has been talking to United as well as fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace.

The Scotsman said: “Eddie Howe is going to be speaking to Newcastle.

“From what I hear, he’s holding back on Celtic and it looks like he’s talking to Newcastle, which is a shame because Steve Bruce has done a good job.”

Whilst I’m sure we have all rolled our eyes at reading another washed up pundit declare Bruce to be doing a good job, if his sources are correct ti would be a big positive.

Steve Bruce will undoubtedly survive for a little while longer with the win at Burnley giving him a bit more time but it would be best for all concerned if Bruce is not the manager for the first game with a full St. James’ Park crowd in.

It would be good for Bruce, who I am sure doesn’t want to be the focus of months of pent up anger and frustration and good for the fans as we could finally move on from a turgid era in the club’s history with Premier League status somehow still in tact and something to be positive about for a change.

In leading Bournemouth to the Premier League, Howe has shown what he has in the locker when it comes to management and it certainly outweighs Bruce.

He has bene out of work since the summer after he stood down as manager of the Cherries following their relegation to the Championship.

He is a hot favourite to be the next manager at Celtic Park but if Football Insider pundit Frank McAvenie is correct, the Premier League seems like his most likely next destination.
