Forgotten Toon midfielder Kieron Dyer played out 90 minutes of a specially arranged practice match against Gretna, and the injury-plagued England international played his first football match in six months.

Dyer last played in April’s derby win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and the atmosphere was slightly different at the training ground where he displayed his talents to ‘one man and his dog’.

The 27-year-old received specialist rehabilitation throughout the summer.

Glenn Roeder: ‘If it goes well, then we’re hoping that he will only be 10 days away from being involved with the first team again.’

Dyer’s return could come against in the televised match against Charlton Athletic at St James’s Park a week on Saturday. But few expect him to be thrown straight into the fray. A place on the bench is probably the best he can expect.
