Many Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media after one fan shared a comparison between the Magpies and Tottenham Hotspur, now that Spurs have qualified for the Champions League Final.
Their observation was that we and Tottenham were relatively similarly sized at the time of Mike Ashley’s takeover, but the Magpies have failed to progress in the same capacity as Spurs in the years since.
Now, whenever we finish a Premier League season in 14th place it is somewhat deemed a success, whereas the North London side are set to finish in the top-four for the fourth successive campaign – Spurs have also failed to finish outside the top eight since the 2008/09 season.
In that time, we on the other hand have been relegated to the Championship twice and only finished higher than tenth in the Premier League once – a fifth-place finish in the 2011/12 campaign.
That fifth-place finish also led to our only European adventure since Ashley’s takeover, as we progressed through to the Quarter-Finals of the Europa League.
When the comparison between Newcastle and Tottenham was shared on Twitter, here’s how some of our fans reacted…
One plays in a brand new billion pound stadium. The other plays in a council owned one in need of a good wash.

Until the supporters come together to force him out, this is how it’s going to be. The future looks pretty bleak, even under Rafa. We’re incredibly lucky to have him as our manager, however with the greatest of respect, he’s no miracle worker. The club needs different ownership!

And remember the season we finished 5th? Who was 8th? Liverpool. Who invested TV money on the pitch and last year still made £100m+ profit? Not the master businessman Ashley. No ambition @NUFC

They haven’t spent a penny the last 3 transfer windows. Don’t give Ashley any ideas of trying to do things the Spurs way haha.

Rewind 10 years before that and Newcastle were a champions league club challenging for the title and spurs were shite. Football changes all the time. You’ve just got enjoy it when you can.
