Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has tipped Burnley manager Sean Dyche to get the top job at Newcastle United when the club’s takeover is confirmed.

The Magpies are awaiting confirmation of their £300m change of ownership, that would see retail tycoon Mike Ashley finally leave the club, with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) taking control of proceedings on Tyneside.

Dyche has never been scared to voice his opinion over the years and has been labelled as one of the best managers in the country.

One of his ex-players, Peter Crouch, previously said that he is an individual that has a “tough exterior” but concluded that he was a “top man” after helping the former England international comes to terms with retirement.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson was supportive for Dyche getting the job and believes managers of his calibre rarely get an opportunity in the modern game.

“I do not see why he should not have the opportunity, he said.

“Managers get pigeon-holed sometimes – the likes of Steve Bruce, Sam Allardyce and Sean Dyche. I would love to see these managers given an opportunity and a budget with the players that other so-called “top managers” get.

“Dyche has done an outstanding job at Burnley. He never gets mentioned for top jobs because he is not fashionable – but why not? They know how to get results and I would love to see them given the opportunity to adapt and experiment with their managerial style.”

It would be a bold move for the prospective owners to pull off, one similar to the one that Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour undertook by retaining the services of Mark Hughes back in 2008, who then famously signed Robinho for £32.5m.

Equally, it could upset the Toon Army after being linked with the likes of former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Magpie Rafael Benitez in terms of disappointing them.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what their first move will be. That’s if the takeover officially goes through.
