‘Delusional’, ‘Don’t see anything incorrect’ – Lots of Newcastle fans react to ex-star’s comments

Former Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez has opened up on why he left United this summer and joined Leicester City for a reported £30million, as told to The Athletic and quoted by the Chronicle.

The fee paid by the Foxes was the minimal figure needed to trigger a release clause in the 26-year-old’s Magpies contract, and proved to be the opening he took despite speculative interest from Valencia in a potential return to Spain.

Perez, though, feels his move to the King Power Stadium will offer him a chance to develop in a way Newcastle could not offer, as United were not motivated to see him continue his growth, having ended last season as our top ‘scorer in the Premier League with twelve goals to his name.

The departure of Rafa Benitez also played a great role in his decision to leave St James’ Park after five years at the club, as he felt his compatriot would be key to the club longing for great things.

“It was a big factor, but also I felt it was time for a change and a new challenge,” Perez said. “In this case, Leicester gave me such a great opportunity to come here.

“The ambition of the club, and the way they are doing the right things, was very important in my decision. Also, as soon as Rafa left the decision was easier. Things could be done better over there at Newcastle, but Leicester have given me the opportunity to do great things, hopefully. There is big ambition [at the King Power Stadium].

“I think how football works, the way you have to look at football, that is the difference between Leicester and Newcastle. There is big motivation here to keep growing and to get better here at Leicester. I didn’t feel they had it at Newcastle. That is why I signed here and made the decision.”

Here’s how these United supporters reacted to his comments…
