Today Paul Dummett was revealed to have signed a new contract.

The Welsh Geordie left back has been speculated to have been getting a new deal for ages before talk went quiet. A long term injury also seemed to knock the talk on the head as his career looked like taking a turn for the worse earlier this season.

Since his return though, Dummett has excelled in a role which was never really his as he was more a centre half but his persistance there has been rewarded.

Dummett who qualifies for Wales due to a grandparent is a born and bred Geordie and was understandably delighted when he spoke on the official Newcastle United website.

Rafa Benitez said his bit about Dummett by declaring:

If you talk about players that are important for the team, normally people talk about goalscorers, midfielders and number tens but in modern football, there are not too many consistent left-sided full-backs.

Paul is exactly that; he understands the game and you know what you can expect from him week in, week out. That’s important when you have a lot of big games. He’s a player you can trust.

Newcastle announced that the deal could run until the Summer of 2022 which to me could be read into as either a straight four year deal or a deal with clauses in.
