Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin is effectively set to miss the remainder of the season due to the thigh injury he sustained in the recent win over title rivals Brighton.

Yedlin has been out since that 2-1 victory but was still called upon by the USA to be assessed by their medical team. He’ll miss the international games with Honduras and Panama as America coach Bruce Arena is expecting a five week absence.

Arena was quoted by the Shields Gazette as saying.

‘DeAndre has been in LA this past week and examined by our team doctors. We realise he is not going to be able to go to these next two matches against Honduras and Panama. It is likely he will be out for about five weeks. I would expect he will be back on the field for Newcastle right at the end of this season in April.’

This timeline could see the former Tottenham defender back for Newcastle’s final two Championship games of the season with Vurnon Anita’s recent return coming at the right time.

Yedlin and Anita have been competing for that starting spot in Rafa Benitez’s side this season.
