We all know just how good Jonjo Shelvey can be on his day with his sublime passing range and ability to unlock a defence, but the midfielder has been labelled as lazy and has recently done an interview with The Daily Mail to share his views and dispute that claim.
Shelvey interview:
– Admits he nearly left for West Ham but club refused
– Wants to stay and is playing for a new deal
– Says Football isn’t all about running using Gazza as an example
– Accepts he won’t start v Watford but will work hard to get back in team #NUFC— NUFC 360 (@NUFC360) August 29, 2019
The midfield man shed light on a number of things, claiming that he almost left the club this summer for West Ham but Newcastle blocked it and that he’s now playing for a new contract, however, the claim that really caught the fan’s eyes is a comparison to Paul Gascoigne.
Shelvey claimed that football isn’t all about running and used Gazza as an example of that, something that plenty of Geordies have now taken an issue with.
You can see what they’ve had to say here:
Bit of a contradiction isn’t it. Nearly joined West Ham but club refused and he wants to say

Haha! Gazza – the greatest player of a generation. Probably the greatest British footballer of all time! Not really a comparison

One of the most frustrating players I’ve ever seen play for us, on his day he is world class – shame he only has two or three a season!

He nearly left as Rafa had him sussed. Rafa went he stayed. End of story. Shame the wrong one stayed #NUFC #ASHLEYOUT #bruceout

It’s a right attitude to an extent. But “it’s not about running” is the attitude that kills him.
His passing is 50/50, when his passing isn’t going well he offers 0. That’s why you can’t use him as a backbone. He’s backup at best in the PL.

Thing is gazza used to work his bollocks off.. .. He would break his neck to make a tackle.. Absolutely ridiculous comparison and that’s before looking at talent

The Magpies aren’t best pleased with Shelvey’s comments and will be keen to see him earn his place back and show what he can do.
