In a news piece titled, Bassong keen on Arsenal move, British broadcasting network Sky Sports misquoted not one, but several key facts about Newcastle United defender Sebastien Bassong.

It said: ‘Bassong, who arrived from Lens in a £1.5million summer deal…’ Both wrong assertions. The 22-year-old was bought from FC Metz, another French club, and the club have so far only paid £500,000 for his services.

The article then goes onto assert that, ‘[Bassong] would welcome a move to Emirates Stadium’ using one of yesterday’s celebrated quotations.

The key word here is research. Does Newcastle United not warrant the attention of the popular press, or the television media?

The saddest aspect of this whole debacle is that many web sites, who have a copy-paste mentality have already posted the ill-informed story, and are running it as their own – with the mistakes as they were.

A word to the wise, Sky may not be the reliable source it used to be. Be sure to consult with several other agencies before relying on anything this corporate giant may have to say about Newcastle United.
