As reported on this site more than a week ago the deal to bring Tom Cleverley on loan from Manchester United is off.
Several newspapers, including the Daily Mail, are today reporting that Wigan have won the race for Cleverley’s signature for the coming season.
It appears the stumbling block was the amount of first team games Newcastle could offer him on a season long loan with Ferguson apparently insistent that he gets plenty of first team playing experience.
Had he come to Newcastle then Hughton would have only used him sparingly and as back up to the likes of Smith, Nolan, Barton and Guthrie.
