Ciaran Clark may have somehow missed out on the main team of the season awards but we have missed him massively since his injury.

The player we signed from Aston Villa has been many of the fans player of the season including mine and has been worth every penny of his £5m fee.

Clark himself has said that Rafa Benitez has made him into a better player since joining us last Summer and who can argue as we’ve slipped a bit since the Republic of Ireland Internationals absence, shipping some comical goals.

Quoted in The Chronicle, Clark spoke of the help Benitez has been to him by saying: It has been a total change for me. He`s real man-manager and he wants you to get involved and learn.

He wants to teach you and improve you as a player. If he does that then it improves the team.

He works hard on defensive shape and positional stuff. It`s something I have probably not had as a player in my career. I feel like I am learning so much and hopefully I can keep doing it.

27 year old Clark returned to full training recently and was quoted by Rafa last week as being close then and it’s expected that he will return to Monday night’s squad to face Preston at St James’ Park
