In what looks to be a major boost for Newcastle United ahead of the visit of Chelsea this weekend, Frank Lampard’s men could be without some key players.
According to the Express, the Blues will be without Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic for the trip to Tyneside, giving the Magpies hope of another famous win. Last season, Isaac Hayden memorably scored late to secure a dramatic victory at St. James’ Park in what was a major scalp for Steve Bruce.
Obviously, Chelsea have a lot of good players on offer but the absence of Thiago in particular should be celebrated. Despite a rocky start to life on these shores, the Brazilian has helped shore things up at the back alongside Edouard Mendy of late, keeping five clean sheets since making his debut.
Prior to him hitting form, questions were asked of Chelsea’s defence during draws against West Brom and Southampton, so have proven vulnerable in the past. Clearly, Newcastle’s attack barely has much of a reputation to strike the fear of God into their opponents, but the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin can certainly cause problems even against teams in the upper echelons of the league.
Has Steve Nickson done a good job?
It’s hard to get too excited about the attackers missing out, however. Aside from Havertz and Pulisic (who was never really a problem given he’s yet to going as a result of his injuries this season), the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham have all impressed in recent times.
With one of the big boys coming, Newcastle will need all the help they can get. Thiago missing out is exactly that.
