Charnley bidding to future-proof Newcastle with move for £6.3m-rated youth international – report

Newcastle Managing Director Lee Charnley is bidding to future proof United with a move to sign Derby County defender Jayden Bogle, according to TEAMtalk.

The Magpies chief faces vast Premier League competition for the England Under 20 international, as Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion are also keen to sign the teenager.

At least one unnamed top-flight side are believed to have already contacted the Rams with an official approach for the £6.3million-rated right-back, who made 50 appearances across all competitions under Frank Lampard last season.

Derby are reluctant to losing the product of their academy but are braced for offers ahead of Thursday’s deadline day, after Bogle was drafted into the Three Lions squad that travelled to France for this summer’s Maurice Revello Tournament in Toulon – although he only featured in the match to decide who finished ninth.

TEAMtalk do not claim knowledge of what fee Derby would deem acceptable.

Whether Bogle is ready to become a first-choice right-back in the Premier League also remains to be seen, but the teenager recorded solid numbers in the second-tier on route to the Play-Off Final last season.

Of the right-backs to feature more than ten times in the Championship during the 2018/19 season, Bogle recorded the joint-second most successful tackles per ninety minutes with 2.7 from 3.5 attempts (0.1 shy of Nottingham Forest’s Saidy Janko).

The Rams ace also averaged 1.7 clearances, 1.4 blocks and 0.9 interceptions per ninety minutes during his 43 second-tier appearances, and connected with teammate Martyn Waghorn for three of his nine assists last season – the third-best combination in the division involving any two players.

A move to sign Bogle would certainly be one with the future in mind, and carry far more longevity in our ranks, plus considerable resale value, when compared to fellow rumoured target Ahmad Elmohamady, after the Aston Villa defender was linked with another reunion with Steve Bruce.
