Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin was left carrying the can as the US national side played out a 1-1 draw with Peru in an international friendly yesterday.
The 25-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur man hasn’t had the best October international break, but then again neither have the US as their first game against Colombia saw a 4-2 defeat and having been dropped to the bench for the Peru match, Yedlin only came on for the final six minutes but it was enough for him to get caught as they secured the equaliser.
In fairness, he came on in the 86th minute and that’s where I’m seeing their goal credited, so it’s not like he had much chance to get into the game first and that’s always a risk with substitutes, but it hasn’t stopped some fans from overreacting on social media.
At least the kids beat Peru 1-0. Yedlin was caught doing what the national team has been doing since 2014. Napping. #USMNT

Except for Yedlin, who should be ashamed of having laid a big fat egg in his few minutes of play. #USMNT https://t.co/2yPLCen8sI

How do you lose?
Put in Bradley and Yedlin
Losers turn a W into a draw which at this point is a L. #USMNT— EvilBBAD (@badtimerunnin) October 17, 2018
Positives: Sargent, Acosta, Amon, Weah, Sweat, Cannon. The confidence.
Negatives: Yedlin in 1 min losses his marker a growing habit. Wood was wood. ????
1-1 @ussoccer_mnt shows signs of improvement but now we need a coach to get the process started officially. #USMNT https://t.co/1fP3Aoku29

#yedinny #USMNT way to blow it for all the hard work of the youth Yedlin. Disappointing.

Are we done giving Yedlin a shot at RB? Cannon played great. Give him more time! #USMNT

Yedlin can't assume just because he's playing in EPL (on a bad team) the #USMNT RB job is his. Simply hasn't made presence felt enough, given his experience, in last year for that to be a given.

I really really want Yedlin to do well for this squad, but I honestly can’t remember the last really good game he played wearing the #usmnt kit. #USAvPER #usaper

How are you lazy covering the back post on a cross when you are brought in for leadership & defense with 10 minutes to go in the match? #Yedlin #USMNT #Peru

I’d suggest their problems go deeper than Yedlin even if it’s accepted he hasn’t been great for them lately.
