Despite the Chronicle‘s Mark Douglas dismissing the club’s interest in Anderlecht striker Isaac Thelin, German magazine Kicker reports that Bayer Leverkusen have joined us and Lokomotiv Moscow in the race to sign the striker.

Belgian newspaper HLN said last week that both us and the Russian side had had €6m (£5.3m) offers accepted for the Swedish international, but that was later reported as being wide of the mark.

Thelin scored 19 goals in all competitions last season and it seems Leverkusen are keen on recruiting the target man. If there was any interest from us, it was likely as a backup option for West Brom’s Salomon Rondon.

The Venezuelan international is expected to seal a loan switch to St James’ Park with Dwight Gayle heading in the other direction on a temporary basis. If we do secure a deal for the Baggies striker, it’s likely we’ll turn our attention away from forwards to secure deals for a couple of defenders before deadline day.

Do you think Rondon will be good signing? Let me know in the poll:
