“Brilliant”, “Give him the armband” – These Newcastle fans react to club post

A few Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after the club shared that Sean Longstaff is in contention to face Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Longstaff has missed our last three fixtures through suspension after being shown a straight red card in our 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers last month, forcing the 22-year-old to sit out our 3-1 win at West Ham United and 2-1 triumph over AFC Bournemouth.

His suspension is now at its end, and head coach Steve Bruce will be able to consider the academy product among his midfield options when deciding who he will field against the reigning Premier League champions.

Bruce discussed Longstaff’s return at his pre-game press conference on Friday, noting, via quotes by the Chronicle: “It’s good to see him back.

“He’s had to wait a long time for his suspension. Three games has spanned over something like six weeks, so it will be good to see him back.”

Longstaff shone against Manchester City earlier in the year and received lavished praise from Sky Blues boss Pep Guardiola after the game, who hailed the midfielder’s partnership with Isaac Hayden as the difference-maker in our 2-1 win.

“We could not deal with Newcastle’s holding midfielders,” Guardiola said. “We started with the goal, but we didn’t have the rhythm we need to impose our game.

“We didn’t take the rhythm of the game, it was slow and we weren’t aggressive enough.”

Longstaff faced Manchester City in January in what was only his fourth Premier League appearance and third senior start of his career.
