I’m sure if Glenn Roeder could shift one player this summer, it would be Jean-Alain Boumsong. And the Frenchman has just about put his final nail in his Toon coffin.

Boumsong, a player Roeder dumped as soon as he took charge at St James’ Park, will not have endeared himself to his United team-mates after suggesting that his defensive colleagues were to blame for his poor Premiership form.

The player Souness refused to drop, who has held on to his place in his national squad for the World Cup despite being dropped by his club, is adamant he would have been better in a Newcastle shirt if he had better players alongside him.

Boumsong: ‘I’ve earned my place in the French squad through my performances on the international stage rather than at club level but if I had been playing alongside Lillian Thuram at club level Newcastle fans would have seen a very different Boumsong.’
