Newcastle may discover today whether they can appoint Glenn Roeder as their permanent manager. But Middlesbrough could get the Toon’s number one target.

Martin O?Neill, who was also on the FA?s shortlist, had been Freddy Shepherd?s first choice. But a meeting with the Toon chaitman did not impress the Ulsterman, despite an amazing offer of £8m over four years.

Delays centred around England and the health of O?Neill?s wife. But in the meantime Roeder has lost only four of his 16 matches.

O?Neill, however, is a genuine target for Niall Quinn?s consortium at Sunderland. But that is never going to happen, despite O’Neill being made favourite for the manager’s job as you read this.

HOWEVER … Steve Gibson, the Middlesbrough chairman, is to try and get O?Neill to move from his Buckinghamshire home to ICI City. And with his manager set to be named manager of England, that COULD happen.
