… his country’s success in Germany.

The 25-year-old has signed for fallen Italian giants Juventus (who have been relegated to Serie B for match-fixing) in a deal worth £3.3m. But he says his troubled times on Tyneside were always at the back of his mind despite being part of the French squad that reached the World Cup final.

Boumsong: ‘My last months with Newcastle were difficult but I was always convinced that it would help me out to overcome other difficult times in my career.

‘The bad experience with Newcastle helped me put things in perspective during the World Cup,’ said the Cameroon-born player who had no playing time in Germany as France reached the final where they lost to Italy.

‘I suffered a lot in Germany even though I was happy about our success. I just tried to remain professional and put my thoughts aside but I must admit it was not always easy for me.

‘My objective is to work as hard as possible to improve myself,’ he added. ‘I am sure I can make it that way. Hard work always pays off.’
