Newcastle’s squad is fairly limited as far as depth goes, and so the prospect of selling a player or two this month won’t appeal to many fans. However, it appears as though some supporters would be glad to see the back of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
We recently asked supporters whether they’d like to see Shelvey be sold by Newcastle, and 59% of those polled have revealed that they would, whilst like 41% of polled supporters want him to remain at St James’ Park.
That’s a pretty shocking stat, given that Shelvey is clearly a favourite of Rafael Benitez. He’s made 8 league starts so far this term, and he would have made many more had he not had a few injury problems so far this term.
Despite his obvious technical talent, though, you can understand why some fans are critical. Between his injury record, disciplinary issues and, perhaps more importantly, his mixed form, Shelvey is a player that will always divide fans.
Furthermore, the lack of depth at Newcastle does mean that new faces are needed, and perhaps by selling someone like Shelvey, those players could be brought in.
Still, it remains to be seen whether Shelvey will still be a Newcastle man on February 1st, for better or worse.
