A Newcastle XI line up that featured a couple of players with first team experience in Gael Bigirimana and Shane Ferguson scraped a 3-2 win up the road at Blyth tonight with a lasp gasp winner.

The absence of Hatem Ben Arfa from playing for the equivalent of what appeared for us here had led to speculation about his future and dominated the pre match talk.

Blyth had much the better of the first half and hit the frame of the goal twice before the half somehow ended goaless.

The second half had more of an end to end feel before we took the lead just after the hour with Tom Heardman converting a decent cross into the box.

Blyth levelled on 75 minutes when Robbie Dale blasted a header past young England keeper Freddie Woodman before one of their defenders, Greg Olley, headed home in the 80th minute.

The game looked to be heading for a Blyth victory before Newcastle’s Jarrett Rivers scored a raker with four minutes left and then with the last action of the night, Liam Smith won it for the black and whites to see the final score of Blyth 2 – Newcastle United 3.

NUFC started with this line up:

Woodman, Olley, Ferguson, Kemen, Williams, Gillhespy, Roberts, Bigirimana, Heardman, Quinn, Smith.
